Sumiko climbs into a coffin and lies down, testing the fit, part of a growing Japanese practice of "trying before you die." The film follows the businesses that have sprung up around the country's aging population and shrinking families, from staged funeral rehearsals to companies that help elderly clients plan and even preview their own send-offs. Interviews with funeral directors, product designers, and customers lay out why so many older Japanese are choosing to confront death directly rather than leave arrangements to relatives, including concerns about dying alone and not becoming a burden. The camera visits showrooms stocked with coffins in different sizes and finishes, and sits in on planning sessions where people pick photos, music, and readings for services they may not need for years. What emerges is a portrait of an industry built on demographic pressure, and of a culture finding practical, sometimes matter-of-fact ways to plan for the one certainty everyone shares.
