NASA's early astronauts fly missions with cameras strapped to their own hands, and this series builds its account almost entirely from that onboard footage. It starts with the Mercury program's scramble to put a single man in orbit, moves through the Gemini and Apollo years to the moon landings, and covers the 1975 Apollo-Soyuz link-up between American and Soviet crews. One sequence follows Bruce McCandless drifting free of any tether outside the shuttle, held to nothing but a jetpack, footage shot from inside his own helmet. Gary Sinise narrates, but the story is carried by the astronauts and engineers who were actually there, telling it in their own words alongside vintage mission rushes rather than reenactments. The HD restoration makes decades-old 16mm and video transfers look sharp enough that switch flips and instrument readings are legible, which matters because so much of the tension here is procedural: what could go wrong, and what the crew did when it did.
