Every Wednesday at 11:00, a group of retirees marches through Maputo waving German flags and banging drums, demanding wages they say Germany still owes them. Julio Faizal Lakha is one of the so-called Madgermanes, part of roughly 17,000 Mozambican contract workers sent to East Germany decades ago under a program that promised education and good pay. Instead, employers withheld half their wages, deferring the money for later payment that never came. Most workers returned home after German reunification and have spent years since chasing the money through petitions, protests, and unanswered letters. Reporter Marc Erath follows Lakha and his fellow demonstrators through the streets of Maputo, using interviews and archival material to trace how a Cold War labor arrangement between two socialist states left ordinary workers stranded between two governments neither of which will settle the debt. The film stays close to the weekly protest itself, letting the demonstrators' persistence, forty years running, carry the story of a grievance still unresolved.
