For over a decade the settlement has been the target of a persistent conspiracy theory claiming it hosts a terrorist training camp, spread through chain emails, right-wing media, and armed militia groups who have shown up at its gates. This film follows the residents of Islamberg, most of them African American converts to Islam who settled there decades ago seeking a quiet, self-sufficient life, as they describe living under surveillance, threats, and periodic waves of national attention. It also traces how the rumor took hold, who profited from repeating it, and what happened when self-styled militiamen plotted an armed raid on the town. Interviews with residents, journalists, and law enforcement lay out the gap between the actual community and the myth built around it, turning the film into a case study of how fear of a minority group can be manufactured and sustained over years.
