Aung San, the general who led Burma to independence and founded the army that still rules it today, is gunned down with his cabinet in 1947, and for decades U Saw, a rival Burmese politician, stands convicted as the lone architect of the killing. This film follows a BBC investigation built around classified British Foreign Office documents released only in 1997, which suggest the plot ran deeper than the official verdict allowed. Reporters trace a paper trail linking U Saw to Sir Reginald Dorman-Smith, the British governor of Burma at the time, raising the question of whether colonial officials knew what was coming, or worse, helped set it in motion. The film also sketches the aftermath the assassination made possible: the 1988 uprising against military rule, the massacre of thousands of demonstrators carrying Aung San's portrait for protection, and the rise of his daughter, Aung San Suu Kyi, as the regime's most dangerous opponent. Archival documents and BBC reporting carry the case, not dramatization.
