Who Sounds Gay?

A filmmaker sets out to answer a question he has turned over for years: why do some men sound stereotypically gay, regardless of whether they actually are? The short pulls in linguists, speech researchers, and gay and straight men themselves to break down the vocal patterns behind the stereotype, from vowel pronunciation to intonation and speech rhythm. Interview subjects describe being assumed gay because of how they talk, or being surprised that their own voice reads that way to strangers, while researchers explain what is actually measurable in pitch and articulation versus what is cultural assumption layered on top. The film treats the stereotype itself as the subject worth examining rather than something to prove true or false, tracing how a voice pattern became shorthand for an identity in the first place. It stays close to interview footage and plain explanation rather than reenactment or narration-heavy framing, keeping the focus on what people say about their own speech and how others hear it.
