Seventy thousand years after his death, the Neanderthal skeleton known as La Ferrassie 1 gets a full forensic workup. A team of paleoanthropologists, forensic specialists, and paleo-artists rebuild him bone by bone, using synchrotron X-rays to peer inside his skull and DNA analysis to pull genetic information out of fossilized remains. The film treats the body like a crime scene, reading old injuries, muscle attachments, and bone density to work out how he moved, what he ate, and what eventually killed him. Researchers compare his skeleton against modern human anatomy to explain why Neanderthals were built heavier and stronger than Homo sapiens, and still lost out. Sculptors and digital artists use the forensic data to reconstruct his face and body, turning measurements into a physical likeness visitors can see. The result is less a general history of Neanderthals than a close case study of one individual, used to argue for specific, testable answers about why his entire species disappeared while ours did not.
