Northeastern Syria's Kurdish-run region, known locally as Rojava, holds the world's largest prison for captured Islamic State fighters and the world's largest camps for their wives and children. Filmmaker Kawa Akrawi traveled there in 2022 to document what happens inside that containment system, from overcrowded cells guarded by the Kurdish-led SDF to camps where western governments have refused to repatriate their own citizens. Newroz Ehmed of the SDF General Command explains that IS was defeated territorially but its ideology and networks persist inside these facilities, which security forces can secure from the outside but not fully control within. The film follows the February 2023 earthquake's disruption of an already fragile region, and traces how Turkish President Erdogan's drone strikes against the YPG, which he brands a terrorist organization, add another layer of instability. Interviews with local officials and fighters, combined with footage from inside the camps, build a picture of a generation of children growing up among former jihadists, and a security situation with implications well beyond Syria's borders.
