This film picks up the story of Earth after the rise of mammals, tracing the emergence of early humans among several other hominin species and asking why Homo sapiens ended up the last one standing. Using a mix of reconstructed landscapes, fossil evidence, and paleontological expertise, it follows the spread of human ancestors out of Africa and into Europe, with particular attention to sites in Germany that document the deep past of that region. The narrative moves through the extinction of rival species like the Neanderthals, the development of tools and social structures, and the slow build toward organized human societies and, eventually, modern civilization. Expert interviews are woven throughout to explain the climatic and biological pressures that shaped survival, while the film keeps returning to the central puzzle of what made one human lineage succeed where others failed. As the second half of a two-part series on the history of the planet, it closes out the larger story begun with the age of the dinosaurs and mammals that followed them.
