Romania's Carpathian range holds some of the largest stretches of unbroken forest left in Europe, and the film moves through them season by season, tracking brown bears, wolves, and lynx in terrain that has kept large predators alive while most of the continent lost them. Shepherds move flocks along routes their families have used for generations, and villagers demonstrate crafts and festivals that have persisted largely untouched by the tourism industry that transformed other parts of the Alps and the Balkans. The film also climbs into the region's history, visiting Sarmizegetusa Regia, the mountaintop capital the Dacians built before Rome conquered them, its stone walls and terraces still traceable on the ridge. Made for the Travel Channel, the film treats the mountains and the people living in them as a single subject rather than separate segments, following rivers, forests, and pastureland as the same system that shapes both wildlife and the customs of the humans who share it.
