Zanskar sits high in the Indian Himalayas, cut off from the rest of the country for most of the year, home to about 12,000 people living in near-total self-sufficiency. The Indian government has been building a road through the cliffs along the Zanskar River to end that isolation, but forty years in, the project crawls forward with equipment too limited for the terrain. Tsultrim Chonjor, a 78-year-old Buddhist monk, has decided not to wait. For two years he has driven a bulldozer himself, cutting a path toward the 5,000-metre Shingo La Pass in an attempt to reach Kargyak, the southernmost village in the valley, before the official road ever arrives. The film follows both efforts side by side, the slow-moving state project and one man's solo campaign, tracking the physical toll of high-altitude construction and what a finished road would mean for a community that has spent centuries defined by its remoteness. Sweeping location footage of the valley and river gorge anchors the story throughout.
