Wine drinking is down about 20 percent across Europe over the past two decades, and experts warn nearly a third of Germany's vineyard acreage, especially its labor-intensive steep slopes, could vanish as a result. This film follows winemakers betting on alcohol-free wine as the fix. In Germany, father and son Jürgen and Luca Dahms represent the split inside the industry: Jürgen makes classic wine, while Luca has built a business marketing de-alcoholized versions. In Spain's Toro region, winemaker Iván Alonso Gil sends bottles of his full-bodied reds, made from ancient vines, to Germany to be de-alcoholized using a process that includes aroma recovery, then tastes the result to see if anything of the original wine survives. Interviews with growers and producers lay out what the steep slopes mean beyond the bottle, for tourism and for the look of the land itself, and the film treats the de-alcoholization process as a genuine open question rather than a marketing pitch.
