Witness - Eviction on Millionaires' Street
Millionaires' Street in St. Petersburg once lined a row of palatial houses built for the city's wealthiest families. The film finds those buildings in disrepair and the people still living inside them facing sudden eviction notices, caught between property developers looking to redevelop the land and city officials residents accuse of working alongside them rather than protecting tenants. Al Jazeera's crew follows several of the residents through their fight to stay, filming inside apartments that still carry traces of the street's grander past even as the surrounding infrastructure crumbles around them. Interviews let the residents describe what the address once meant and what losing it now would cost them, turning eviction from a policy abstraction into a specific, ongoing dispute over specific homes. The film does not resolve the standoff; it documents it as it happens, tracking the pressure tactics used against tenants and the gap between the street's name and its present condition.
