Witness - Return to L'Aquila - Broken Promises
L'Aquila was flattened by a magnitude 6.3 earthquake in April 2009, and 60,000 residents were moved into tent camps while the Italian government promised a fast rebuild. This Al Jazeera Witness film returns to five people the crew first met in two earlier documentaries, From Zero - Ask the Dust and From Zero - Next Moves: Nicoletta, Mario, Saleh, Rosa, and Antonello. Nearly two years on, the cameras find a city that has largely dropped out of the news, its center still closed off and hollow. The Civil Guard has withdrawn, handing the recovery back to a mayor's office with no real budget and no functioning plan, and the film follows each of the five as they try to rebuild without either. There are no reconstructed streets to show, only stalled paperwork, empty apartments, and a community that has scattered while officials talk about progress. It is a plain, on-the-ground account of what a broken promise looks like two years after the headlines moved on.
