Witness - Teen Miners
Jorge Mollinedo and Alex Choque have worked in Bolivia's tin mines since childhood, and this film catches up with them as teenagers, now weighing what comes next. It is the third installment following the pair, who first appeared on camera as children in an earlier film called Child Miners, and the years show plainly on their faces and in how they talk about the work. The mines have given them a livelihood and also the threat of silicosis, the lung disease that shortens the lives of men who spend decades underground. Jorge sees a way out through the military, a path he hopes leads somewhere beyond the pit and might, in his mind, do some good for the country as well. Alex's situation looks different: fewer options, more pressure to keep going down the same shaft that has defined his life so far. The camera follows both of them between the tunnels and their homes, letting the gap between their two futures speak for itself.
