Witness - Tender Moments South Africa
Tender Mavundla auditions for South Africa's Idols competition and tells the judges, and the country watching, that she is HIV positive. This film follows her after the show ends, back to her family's rural home in a community where AIDS has touched nearly every household. Cameras sit with her through the ordinary weight of the diagnosis: taking daily medication, weighing whether to have children or consider adoption, and deciding how much of her health to share with people who might otherwise only know her voice. She keeps chasing a singing career alongside all of it, rehearsing and performing even as the film tracks the medical and family conversations happening off stage. There is no narrator standing between Tender and the camera; her own account of the competition, her status, and her plans carries the film. It stays close to one household in one community rather than widening into statistics, using her circumstances to show what living with HIV actually requires day to day.
