In early 1945, as the Nazi regime collapsed, an estimated 860,000 women and girls in Germany were sexually assaulted by soldiers of the occupying armies, including Allied forces from the West. This DW documentary tells that largely suppressed chapter through the women who survived it, their children and grandchildren, and historians who trace how the assaults were recorded, ignored, or covered up. Interviewees describe decades of silence kept out of shame and fear, especially where the perpetrators wore Western uniforms, and the film follows the children born of these rapes as they confront a family history their mothers rarely spoke about. Archival photographs and wartime footage anchor the testimony, while historians place the abuse within the broader pattern of sexual violence that has accompanied warfare before and since. The film argues that Germany's postwar reckoning left this specific trauma out of the national memory, and it makes the case for naming it directly rather than leaving it as a private, inherited wound.
