Every year more than 100,000 square kilometers of good soil disappears worldwide, paved over, chemically treated, or farmed until it gives out. This DW film follows people trying to reverse that. Austrian farmer Josef Nagl, after a near-fatal accident made him rethink what he would leave his children, abandoned plowing and chemical fertilizer on his family farm, switching to diverse crop rotation and constant field greening through the Kaindorf ecological region, a farmer network that pays a premium for rebuilding humus and capturing carbon. In eastern Germany, on land stripped bare by Soviet-era uranium mining, microbiologist Erika Kothe of the University of Jena and geologist Thorsten Schäfer test whether roots, bacteria, and mycorrhizal fungi can bind heavy metals and acids well enough to bring a moonlike landscape back to life. The film moves between the working farm and the contaminated mining site, treating soil not as background but as a living system whose health is tied directly to climate stability and food security.
