Mica gives cosmetics, paints, and car parts their shimmer, and much of the world's supply comes from illegal mines dug by hand in the forests of Jharkhand and Bihar in eastern India. This film follows the miners, adults and children among them, who crawl into narrow ghost pits with no support beams, no safety gear, and no legal protection, since the mines operate outside any regulated industry. Camera crews go into forest camps and crude roadside workshops where families sort and grind raw mica for a few rupees a day, and interviews with miners lay out the math of the trade: the mineral that makes a lipstick sparkle passes through a supply chain that erases where it came from by the time it reaches a factory in Europe or the US. The film traces that chain upward, contrasting the miners' conditions with the global beauty and auto industries that depend on their product, and asks the companies at the top what they actually know about where their glitter comes from.
