Route 40 runs 5,000 kilometers along the Andes, linking the north and south of Argentina, and locals call it the Devil's Road. This episode follows the drivers, police, and rescue workers who deal with its consequences: unpaved stretches, collapsing infrastructure, and a culture of speeding, reckless overtaking, and illegal motorcycle races called Picadiña. The film cites 6,000 road deaths nationwide in 2021 and roughly 15,000 accidents a year on Argentina's roads, close to 50 a day, and traces the causes to unroadworthy cars (one in three with faulty brakes or lights), the fifth of drivers with no license, and police enforcement undermined by corruption and noncompliance. The camera rides with the volunteer Bomberos firefighters of Mendoza, the first responders who reach most crashes, and shows the French firefighters who supply them with equipment and training. Interviews with drivers, officers, and rescuers frame a road where infrastructure, law enforcement, and driver behavior all fail at once.
