World's Most Dangerous Roads: Route to Uganda (The Lunatic Express)
Truckers Josephat and Paul haul more than 20 tons of cargo along the road linking Mombasa's seaport to Kampala, a route long nicknamed the Lunatic Express for its blind curves, narrow passes, and reckless drivers. The film rides in the cabin with them as they navigate delays that can stretch for days, share the road with elephants and the occasional lion, and stay alert for robbers and conmen working the highway. Between the hazards, the cameras stop for local color along the way, including East Africa's smallest church and a traditional bullfight drawing hundreds of participants. Cargo worth tens or hundreds of thousands of dollars rides on getting the truck through intact, and that stake gives the trip its structure, from the port warehouses of Mombasa through Nairobi traffic to the final approach into Kampala. Narration tracks the practical realities of long-haul trucking in East Africa, the fatigue, the informal economy along the route, and the goods the country depends on arriving safely.
