Jakarta anchors a metropolitan region of more than 30 million people, one of the largest urban agglomerations on the planet, and this film tracks the forces pulling it in different directions at once. Cameras move between kampung neighborhoods built dense and informal along the canals and the glass towers of the Sudirman business district, following residents, planners, and workers who navigate the gap between the two. The film looks at Jakarta's chronic flooding and sinking ground, a product of over-extracted groundwater and rising sea levels, and the traffic congestion that has pushed the government to plan a new capital elsewhere on Java. It also follows the informal economy, street vendors, motorbike taxi drivers, and market traders, that keeps the city functioning outside any official plan. Interviews with residents sit alongside aerial footage of the sprawl and street-level scenes of daily commutes, giving a sense of how a city this size actually runs day to day. The result is a portrait of a capital straining against its own growth.
