Among the Tsaatan reindeer herders of northern Mongolia, a young man named Quizilol has to prove himself before he can marry Solongo, the woman he loves. Her father sets the test: Quizilol must raise and manage a herd of reindeer on his own, starting with a single young stallion his family gives him. When a blizzard hits, the stallion bolts into the mountains the Tsaatan consider the dwelling place of spirits, heading toward the Russian border, where it will be gone for good if it crosses over. What follows is a solo tracking effort through snow and open plain, filmed on location with the Tsaatan community rather than reenacted at a distance. The film stays close to the practical stakes of nomadic life: a herd lost means a marriage lost, and a young man's standing in his community rests on whether he can bring one stallion back before the border does. It is a small, specific story about a vanishing way of life told through one night's crisis.
