Siberia's Arctic railways run in temperatures down to minus 20 degrees Celsius, and this film follows the trains that keep the region's gas industry moving through snowstorms and permafrost. The route starts in Tobolsk and runs 1,000 miles north to Novy Urengoy, Russia's largest gas field, with snowplough trains working constantly to keep the tracks clear. From there the journey pushes on across the gas fields to Nadym, where a new line is being built over the route of Stalin's notorious unfinished Salekhard-Igarka railway, nicknamed the Railway of Death for the gulag labor that built it. The film also spends time with the nomadic Nenets people, who herd reindeer across this same frozen landscape. The line ends at Labytnangi, where a private railway serves the Bovanenkovo gas field, the northernmost railway on Earth. Interviews with engineers and crew, plus footage of the trains battling ice and whiteout conditions, carry the story of a rail network built purely to serve extraction in one of the planet's harshest environments.
