MIT OpenCourseWare offers this laboratory course on measuring the engineering properties of construction materials. Weekly experiments cover load-deformation behavior and failure modes in both natural materials like soil and wood and fabricated materials like steel and concrete, using instruments such as load frames and strain gauges. Students collect data, analyze results, and practice writing them up as formal reports, mirroring the documentation expected in professional engineering practice. The course materials include lab handouts, assignments, and background readings on testing methods and standards. It suits students who want hands-on grounding in how civil engineers verify the strength and behavior of the materials that go into bridges, buildings, and foundations, rather than just the theory behind it. As with other MIT OpenCourseWare offerings, materials are free to access and there is no certificate.
