MIT OpenCourseWare offers this introduction to generating symbolic descriptions of a scene from images. The syllabus covers the physics of image formation, image analysis, binary image processing, and filtering techniques, building toward how machines interpret visual data for robotics and automated interaction with their environment. Materials include lecture notes, problem sets, and exams as published by MIT's Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science. Students taking the graduate version complete additional assignments beyond the undergraduate track, giving the course two levels of depth. As with other MIT OCW offerings, all materials are free to access under a Creative Commons license, with no certificate offered. The course suits students with some background in linear algebra and programming who want a grounding in classical machine vision methods before moving into modern computer vision or robotics work.
