Harmony and Counterpoint II
Continues MIT's music theory sequence with a focus on the Classical idiom of central Europe, roughly 1750 to 1825. After a quick review of material from 21M.301, the course covers chromatic harmony, including the fully diminished seventh chord, the Neapolitan sixth, and augmented sixth chords, along with chromatic modulation. Lecture and discussion sessions are paired with keyboard laboratory and sight-singing laboratory work, so theory gets tested against actual playing and singing. Everything comes together in a semester-long project: composing an original theme and two variations in Classical style. Course materials come from MIT OpenCourseWare and include lecture notes and assignments, free to access, with no certificate offered.
