MIT OpenCourseWare offers this project-based subject on applying cognitive science and technology to industrial design. Students learn prototyping techniques and methods for objectively evaluating products that combine mechanical and electronic components, then apply those evaluation processes while building a functioning smart product prototype. Coursework includes presenting assigned readings, developing hands-on prototyping skills, and writing a publication-style paper describing the final design. The class draws on engineering, aesthetics, and creative design skills together, aimed at students who want to create physical products that incorporate electronics and computing into smart, interactive scenarios. Materials are provided free through MIT OpenCourseWare under a Creative Commons license, with no certificate offered. The course sits within MIT's Media Arts and Sciences program and suits students already comfortable with engineering fundamentals who want to move into designing intelligent physical products.
