An MIT OpenCourseWare graduate course on solving integral equations from an applied mathematics standpoint. Topics include Volterra and Fredholm equations, Fredholm theory, the Hilbert-Schmidt theorem, the Wiener-Hopf method and its use with partial differential equations, the Hilbert problem, singular integral equations of Cauchy type, the inverse scattering transform, and relevant group theory. Worked examples draw from fluid and solid mechanics, acoustics, and quantum mechanics, showing how these techniques solve real physical problems. Materials are published freely under a Creative Commons license and include the course's selected topics and problem sets as made available through MIT OpenCourseWare, following MIT's standard self-paced, no-certificate format for its open courseware offerings.
