Interest-Driven Learning
Justin Reich leads this MIT CMS.595 Learning, Media, and Technology session on why informal learning, the kind that happens when people pursue hobbies, games, or online communities out of genuine interest, rarely transfers into formal school settings. Reich and participants work through the tension between centralized, standardized educational platforms built for scale and accountability, and decentralized, student-owned environments where learners set their own goals and pace. The discussion draws on examples of informal learning communities to ask what schools would have to give up, in control, measurement, or uniformity, to make room for interest-driven approaches. Running 76 minutes, the session is structured as a seminar discussion rather than a straight lecture, with Reich posing questions and participants responding, typical of this graduate course's format. It is the twelfth session in the Spring 2024 offering of the course, part of MIT OpenCourseWare's published recordings.
