Learning Games
Justin Reich teaches session 14 of MIT's CMS.595 Learning, Media, and Technology, taking up games as learning environments. The class opens with students recalling the games they played as children, then moves to board games and the kinds of skills, strategic thinking, negotiation, pattern recognition, that transfer from play to other contexts. Reich uses this to build toward a distinction between gamification, where points and badges are bolted onto existing material, and what he calls resonant games, where the mechanics themselves embody the concept being taught. The discussion is conversational and seminar style, drawing heavily on student contributions rather than a straight lecture format, with Reich steering the group toward why some educational games succeed as learning tools while others amount to little more than decorated worksheets.
