Introduction to European and Latin American Fiction
A survey of European and Latin American fiction taught historically, from the sixteenth-century picaresque novel Lazarillo de Tormes through contemporary European writing. Readings trace major fictional modes across periods, including the eighteenth-century epistolary novel Les Liaisons dangereuses and twentieth-century works like Calvino's Cosmicomics and Fuentes's Aura. Alongside literary movements, the course examines how history, geography, language and cultural context shaped these forms. Materials from MIT OpenCourseWare include the syllabus, reading list, and assignments used in the original course; the reading load is substantial.
