MIT's studio course in analog and digital photography covers SLR and medium/large format camera operation, film exposure and development, black and white darkroom printing, digital imaging, and studio lighting. Students work toward a theme- and site-specific term project set in MIT's Department of Brain and Cognitive Sciences, building technical skill alongside personal artistic direction. Work in progress is reviewed continuously in a critical forum, with lectures, readings, visits from working photographers, group discussions, and site visits building both craft and a critical eye on how images function in culture. The semester ends with final projects mounted as an on-site exhibition. Materials available through MIT OpenCourseWare include the syllabus, assignments, and project guidelines, free to access with no certificate offered.
