MIT's introduction to software engineering using Java, offered during the Independent Activities Period, a four-week term at MIT each January. The course covers Java fundamentals and prepares students for concepts used in MIT's 6.005 software construction course, with an emphasis on writing working, high quality code that solves real problems. Each class combines one hour of lecture with one hour of assisted lab work, giving students hands-on practice alongside instruction. The course assumes some prior programming experience but is designed to be workable for motivated beginners. Materials available through MIT OpenCourseWare include lecture notes and lab exercises. Free to access, with no certificate offered through OpenCourseWare, since this is a self-study version of an MIT residential course rather than an online certificate program.
