World music traditions from around the globe form the core of this MIT OpenCourseWare course, which examines how music both reflects and shapes the cultures that produce it. Weekly listening assignments pair with readings from a textbook and accompanying CDs, while lecture-demonstrations and workshops let students engage hands-on with instruments and performance techniques. Concerts by visiting master musicians supplement the case-study approach, which focuses on close analysis of specific traditions rather than a broad survey. Materials include the full syllabus, listening lists, and assignments as originally taught at MIT. No certificate is offered, consistent with MIT OpenCourseWare's open publication of course materials rather than a formal instructor-led class. Good for a listener who wants structured exposure to non-Western musical systems alongside some practical exercises.
