Mechanics and Materials II
MIT OpenCourseWare offers this Mechanical Engineering course on how solid materials respond to mechanical and thermal loads. Lessons cover the physical mechanisms behind stiffness, strength, toughness, and durability, along with the testing procedures engineers use to quantify these properties, such as tensile testing and fracture analysis. Problem sets apply the theory to materials-limited design problems, building the quantitative skills needed to choose appropriate materials for a mechanical design. The course includes lecture notes, assignments, and exams with solutions, following MIT's standard OpenCourseWare format. It builds on an introductory mechanics of materials course and is aimed at students who already have a grounding in stress, strain, and basic material behavior.
