MIT's Playwrights' Workshop guides students through sustained development of original play scripts across a semester of weekly workshop sessions. Writers bring pages for group critique, meet one on one with the instructor for individual consultation, and collaborate directly with student actors, directors, and designers who help stage readings of works in progress. The course materials on MIT OpenCourseWare include the syllabus, assignment structure, and grading criteria used in the class. Scripts that reach a finished state become eligible for the Playwrights' Workshop Production, giving writers a concrete endpoint and an audience beyond the classroom. The course sits within MIT's Music and Theater Arts program and assumes some prior writing experience, functioning as a continuation course rather than an introduction to playwriting fundamentals. No certificate is offered, consistent with MIT OCW's open publication of course materials.
