Prapela Case Study
John Konsin, CEO of Prapela, joins MIT's Substance Use Disorder Ventures Program to walk through his company as a case study in medical device entrepreneurship. Prapela makes a stochastic vibrotactile stimulation device aimed at treating neonatal apnea, originally developed from NASA-funded research into vestibular stimulation. Konsin discusses the path from technology licensing to FDA clearance, the regulatory and reimbursement hurdles specific to a device targeting a vulnerable patient population, and how the company positioned itself commercially within neonatal intensive care units. The session format is a guided discussion rather than a monologue, with Konsin fielding questions from program faculty and students about venture strategy, capital raising, and the practical difficulties of building a medtech startup around a single core product. The lecture gives a concrete, founder-level account of translating a research discovery into a viable health care business.
