MIT's Independent Activities Period seminar looks at how federal policy shapes the careers of scientists and engineers and how government decisions steer science and technology innovation. Developed since 2006 with MIT's Science Policy Initiative, the course walks through the mechanics of Washington policymaking as it applies to research funding, innovation systems, and the public role of science. Sessions are structured around student-led discussion, readings, and direct interaction with MIT faculty and students working in science policy roles. The goal is practical: giving those headed into technical careers a working grasp of how policy decisions get made and where they can plug into that process. Materials are posted through MIT OpenCourseWare and include the syllabus and discussion topics used in the seminar, free to access with no certificate attached.
