Addiction Treatment: Clinical Skills for Healthcare Providers
Seven Yale instructors, led by Jeanette Tetrault, teach clinicians how to screen, diagnose, and manage substance use disorder across 6 modules and 2 weeks at 10 hours a week, built around a single model case performed by actors. The modules move from patient-centered conversation and implicit bias through screening tools and brief intervention, treatment planning using the stepped care model, medications for opioid, alcohol, and nicotine use disorder, psychosocial and behavioral therapies, and the societal factors (systemic racism, policy, access) that shape recovery. The course is partly funded by SAMHSA and is aimed at healthcare providers rather than general audiences, though anyone can enroll. Its stated goal is narrow and practical: better care for patients living with a chronic, relapsing-remitting disease. All videos, readings, and quizzes are free to audit without purchasing the certificate.
