MIT OpenCourseWare offers this course on designing information systems for biological and medical data, developed as part of the Singapore-MIT Alliance program (SMA 5304). The material follows a complete data life cycle: acquisition, storage, retrieval, and analysis, covering database design, client-server strategies, data interchange protocols, and computational modeling architectures. Examples draw from real biology and medicine applications. Students are expected to already know a programming language such as C, C++, Java, Lisp, Perl, or Python, and to have some familiarity with scientific software. A major term project anchors the course, aimed at motivated seniors with a strong interest in biomedical engineering and information system design who can carry out a substantial independent project. Materials are available freely through MIT OpenCourseWare under a Creative Commons license, with no certificate offered.
