An MIT OpenCourseWare graduate course on the mathematics and algorithms behind surface and solid modeling. Topics include b-splines and non-uniform rational b-splines, physically based deformable surfaces, sweeps and generalized cylinders, blending and filleting surfaces, nonlinear solvers, and intersection problems. The solid modeling half covers constructive solid geometry, boundary representation, non-manifold models, and octrees, along with robustness of geometric computations, interval methods, finite and boundary element discretization, scientific visualization, variational geometry, tolerances, and feature recognition for design and manufacturing. Originally offered as 13.472J in the Department of Ocean Engineering, it was renumbered 2.158J after that department merged into Mechanical Engineering in 2005. The course includes analytical and programming assignments and is aimed at advanced students working on geometric modeling for engineering analysis and manufacturing. Materials are free through MIT OpenCourseWare with no certificate offered.
