Development Economics: Macroeconomics
MIT's graduate course on the macroeconomics of growth and development, covering the first half of a semester taught by Robert Townsend before Abhijit Banerjee took over for the second half (not included in these materials). Lectures and readings build dynamic models of migration, modernization, and technological change, then move into static and dynamic models of political economy and the mechanics of income distribution and institutional change over time. Sessions also examine firm structure in developing countries, the transparency and functioning of financial markets, privatization programs, and the role of banks and credit institutions in emerging markets. Materials on OCW include lecture notes and assignments from sessions one through thirteen, giving a working sense of how economists model long-run development rather than short-run business cycles. No certificate is offered; this is MIT's open courseware archive, free to use for self-study or teaching.
