Economic Development, Policy Analysis, and Industrialization
This MIT OCW course examines why governments in latecomer countries have repeatedly intervened to build industrial capacity, tracing policy choices through four recurring turning points: starting industrial activity from scratch, diversifying an existing industrial base, restructuring major industrial institutions, and pushing into high-technology sectors. Readings and lecture materials draw on theoretical debates in development economics alongside historical cases of state-led industrialization in East Asia, Latin America, and elsewhere, weighing arguments for and against government intervention in markets. The course includes a syllabus, reading lists, and assignments as published on MIT OpenCourseWare, letting you follow the same materials MIT students use. No video lectures are included, but the course materials are free to access and reuse under MIT's open license, with no certificate offered.
