Sustainable architecture materials form the core of this MIT OpenCourseWare course. Students study the materials currently used in responsible design practice, focusing on the physical properties most relevant to structural and building assembly, alongside experimental materials that are untested but show promise for future construction. The course traces how ideas of sustainable and responsible design have evolved within architecture, pushing students to refine their own design philosophy against that history. Materials are drawn from MIT's architecture curriculum and include lecture notes and design assignments typical of an advanced studio-adjacent course. No video lectures are indicated; the course is delivered through OCW's standard published materials, free to access, with no certificate offered. Suited to students or practitioners wanting a grounded look at material selection as an ethical and technical problem in building design.
