MIT OpenCourseWare presents this advanced electrical engineering course on physical-layer communication systems, taught with a top-down design approach. Lectures and materials cover communication theory, coders and decoders, filters, multi-tone modulation, and synchronization sub-systems, along with the algorithms and hardware architectures needed to implement them. The course centers on a hands-on project, in this iteration a WLAN transceiver, that carries students through the full design pipeline: from communication theory and algorithm development through architecture design to a synthesized standard-cell RTL chip representation. The materials function as a complete system-on-a-chip design exercise for wireless communication hardware. As with other MIT OCW offerings, course materials are free to access under a Creative Commons license, with no certificate offered. Suited to students who already have a background in signal processing or digital communications and want to see how theory becomes silicon.
