MIT's physical education course in fencing covers the fundamentals of the sport: footwork, bladework, bouting, and refereeing. Materials include a syllabus outlining skill progression from basic stance and lunges through offensive and defensive bladework, culminating in full bouts. Students learn to read an opponent's actions, analyze a fencing bout in progress, and apply footwork and blade technique creatively under bout conditions. The course also introduces the rules and mechanics of refereeing, so students leave able to judge as well as fence. Offered through MIT's Department of Athletics, Physical Education and Recreation, it is available free through MIT OpenCourseWare with course materials but no certificate.
