YALE · Modern Poetry with Langdon Hammer (ENGL 310) · LECTURE 18

Langdon Hammer continues Yale's Modern Poetry course (ENGL 310) with a second session on Marianne Moore. He returns to "An Octopus," tracing Moore's technique of stitching quotations from outside sources into her verse, then reads "Silence" alongside nineteenth-century poetic tradition and Moore's own personal reserve. Drawing on Elizabeth Bishop's memoir of Moore, Hammer discusses her relationships with fellow modernists, particularly the male poets around her. The lecture closes with readings of "The Fish," "To a Snail," "When I Buy Pictures," and "The Paper Nautilus," using these poems to build a broader account of restraint and compression as organizing principles in Moore's style. Recorded in Spring 2007 as part of Yale's Open Courses initiative, the session is close reading throughout, moving line by line through each poem while situating Moore within modernism's wider debates about voice and influence.
