YALE · Modern Poetry with Langdon Hammer (ENGL 310) · LECTURE 21

Langdon Hammer continues his Yale course on modern poetry with a close reading of Wallace Stevens's late work. He examines Stevens's idea of the poet as reader and the world as a text to be translated, working through "Large Red Man Reading" and "The Poem that Took the Place of a Mountain." The lecture then turns to "The Plain Sense of Things" and "Not Ideas About the Thing but the Thing Itself" to trace Stevens's preoccupation with natural cycles and bare sensory experience. Hammer closes with "A Primitive Like an Orb," reading it as Stevens's final vision of ceaseless change, where the poet's verbal play becomes part of the world's own transformation. Recorded in spring 2007 as part of Yale's ENGL 310, Modern Poetry, the session is built entirely around line-by-line analysis of the poems, with each text taken up in turn and set against Stevens's broader late style.
