MIT's legendary introduction to computation, based on the Abelson and Sussman textbook of the same name and taught using the Scheme programming language. The course builds up core ideas in programming languages, from procedural and data abstraction to recursion, state, streams, and the design of interpreters and evaluators, using them to analyze computational systems and construct solutions to abstract problems. Materials include lecture notes, video lectures, and substantial weekly programming assignments that form the backbone of the course, worth 4 Engineering Design Points at MIT. There is no institutional exam or graded certificate through OCW, but the full problem sets and course structure are provided for self-study. It remains one of the most influential computer science courses ever recorded, shaping how generations of programmers think about abstraction and program design.
